The Lightning Bug is designed and constructed to withstand the rigors of karting and provide safe and exciting racing for drivers of different levels.
Safety features include an emergency cutoff switch, a 100 amp circuit breaker, and 50 Amp Anderson style connectors, protected cables, and all-steel case and chain guards round out the safety features. The batteries have their own built-in safety features: overheat, over current, over and under voltage safety shutdowns.
Each battery lasts at least 15 minutes, which is more than long enough for any sprint race. Swapping to a fresh battery takes less than a minute, and you are ready to race at full power again! Four batteries are included with the Lightning Bug so you are ready for a whole race day without having to recharge batteries at the track. Each battery comes with a 3 Amp charger and fully recharges in about 7-8 hours. All 4 batteries can charge off one 15 Amp circuit at the same time.
Lightning Bug was designed with economy and utility in mind.
Race the kart you love, and power it with a Lightning Bug! It's designed for a simple bolts-only swap onto any common (CIK-FIA) type go-kart frame. You don't need to buy a special kart frame to go electric, so you don't have to modify your existing kart: no welding, no drilling, just bolt it on and go racing! Battery and all, it weighs just less than a Briggs & Stratton LO206 motor configured for racing.
The 3000 Watt motor is plenty of power without getting crazy or dangerous. Perfectly matched battery, controller, and motor run with high power precision, with the all-electric torque you expect: 4 hp, 6 Nm of torque at 4900 RPM. That's about 55 MPH for an adult kart.
The four small, slow-charge batteries and overnight chargers are much less expensive than one small fast-charge battery with a fast charger.
A special circuit is available to hook up to a MyChron and record your racing data, including RPM, Lap time, g-forces, track line, etc. The drive sprockets are available for a #35 or a #219 chain, so you can reuse your existing rear axle gears. A Coulomb meter is included for monitoring battery status on or off track.
A simple plug-in connector can be used to limit RPMs for novice drivers such as those in the Kid Kart or Junior 1 classes, while the more advanced drivers such as those in Junior 2, Lights, Heavy, and Masters can run unrestricted. This means that one motor can last a young racer's entire career from Kid Kart to Masters.
